Coaches, please write your athlete's first/last name and your team name on the post-it/sticky pad
colored paper (given to you at the coaches meeting). Stick the post-it/sticky note colored paper to the
placing card your athlete gives you after their race. Turn in BOTH the placing card and the post-
it/sticky note colored paper to the Shelter inside scoring area as soon as you are able after each race
so scoring can be completed ASAP throughout the meet.
SCORING: Varsity/JV Varsity
Each school varsity teams will earn a team score for their top 4 fastest skiers.
We will determine the team scores by converting each varsity skiers finish time (minus their wave start time) into an overall race finish placement position. We will then add each schools (4) team member’s highest scores together.  Highest (4) accumulative score wins 1st place = 100 points, 2nd place = 99 points, 3rd place = 98 points, etc....

Yes! So Good!

Such a great practice today everyone. Let's roll this momentum into the second half of the season. So many positives today during the Time Trial.
Energy levels were up even though the sun wasn't;) Warm up loops at dawn as the Powder Bump loomed over us. Big winds curled down and buffeted us at the base, but all that fresh corduroy warmed the soul.
I loved the commitment on the down hill step turn drills! Nothing like laughing at your teammates as their carcass rolls down the hill from a poorly executed step turn. You have to check your pride at the door and go for it.

I hope everyone feels better because you looked better. Can I dare say we looked like a ski team today;)

Thanks everyone! I'm still smirking and holding back laughs when I think of Mitchell's step turn run thing and all snow clad skiers picking themselves off the deck. You guys are awesome.

I'm checking out till Tuesday. Need to get my real snow fix! Peggy will be sending out e-mails regarding practices, maybe Friday and Monday. Make time to get out and ski at Riverside (man made loop) or the Northloop. Don't lose the gains you've made.

Happy New Year!

Thursday (Ski trip & Winter Break Notes)

Winter Solstice, Picture, Secret Santa, ski day. It sounded overwhelming but you guys knocked it out. They were small gifts but the thoughtful gestures to your teammates were huge. I think the Teams best gift was Tennessee shaving, I hope his Secret Santa put a little after shave in his goodie bag;) This weeks lesson: we all bring value to this Team. Thank you for being such great individuals. Your character is as important as physical skill.
The snow is slow and sloppy but don't let the negatives set in. Find the positives and enjoy tomorrow's ski!

I need to know who's going on the ski trip by tomorrow! You should have received an e-mail with some basic info. I need a yes or no as to whether you are going by tomorrow.

Winter Break Notes: Brainerd race is scheduled for Thursday the 29th. I was thinking about having a ski wax pot luck Wednesday night. Race flyer will go up tomorrow. First day back from break we also have a race in St. Cloud.

Depending on our snow situation I was planning to set up some informal ski practices over break, if you can make you can make. Friday, Monday, Tuesday mornings. More details to come...

Picture Day

Wednesday Team photo day.
PLEASE BRING YOUR UNIFORM for the Team photo.

So many small and big victories today.

Hope everyone truly enjoyed the unique night ski racing experience we had today.

We'll talk about the race tomorrow.

Lastly, Secret Santa exchange tomorrow as well.

Normally we wax before races but not this time. I just can't give up a great day on the trails to wax.
Conditions should be primo! Let's make the most of the day. I want everyone to go into the race confident they have the skills to compete or complete their race.

Reminder: Pics Wednesday, grab a photo pamphlet tomorrow if you're interested.

Tuesday

Monday Lessons:
1. It's cold out.
2. Skiing is hard work.

The thin snow cover and cold temps make learning to ski very challenging. Thanks for all your patience during instruction and keeping a smile while practicing today.

When temps are this cold we can't stand around. If you ski you will stay warm. If your cheeks were stinging don't be afraid to put a little Vaseline on them:)

I did just receive 10 new Tech buffs/neck warmers. Let me know if you're interested they are $20.

Reminder try not to ski on or near any of the sidewalks or concrete walk ways. You could cause some major damage to your skis. Walk skis to the trail and clip in there. Try avoiding sticks and dirt spots as well.

I want everyone to think about the Goals they wrote down Friday. You need to be open to change and feeling uncomfortable to affect growth. Let's get out of those old ruts!

"As a single footstep will not make a path on the earth, so a single thought will not make a pathway in the mind. To make a deep physical path, we walk again and again. To make a deep mental path, we must think over and over the kind of thoughts we wish to dominate our lives." Henry David Thoreau

-I'm expecting race details tomorrow. Will update as soon as possible. It does sound like a short race due to snow conditions.

-Parent Dessert Night tomorrow

-Belling Ringing Saturday 12-2, Coburn's on Cooper

Race Update

I was just informed by the Race Host we will be having a race this Thursday at Riverside Park.
Details still to come. There was uncertainty with the amount of snow and cold but things look like they will be a go.

Sunday, December 11, 2016

Monday

Snow, a little thin but we'll take it.

There will be a bus leaving Tech at 3:45 tomorrow if you're not driving. (door 7 same as before.)
Please change before the ride to Riverside. This way when you get there we can immediately start skiing.
Please inform your parents they will have to pick you up  at Riverside.
Since the school pulled our ski room from us please find a friendly place to stash your skis for the day. You can put them in Andrea's room in the Activities Office as well.

Parent Social Tuesday, 6:30. Check e-mail for details.

Looking forward to tomorrow:)

Thursday, December 8, 2016

Friday

Friday we will be a recovery day. Light run take shake out today's effort. "Bring warm clothing" will now be the norm. Back indoors for the remainder.

This has been one of the toughest starts to a winter I've seen in 6 years. No snow, then no snow with cold can be a deal breaker. Thank you all new skiers for keeping the faith. Skiing is and will be everything you were sold on! You will, we will all have those moments of great skiing. When we get those chances to ski let's appreciate them, not take them for granted. We've grown stronger physically but lets continue to be mentally strong as we prepare to ski and race.

There is s s s ssnow in the forecast, keep your fingers crossed and do a snow dance if you haven't! The many forecast also show bitter cold going into next, if you've been waiting to invest in windproof outer layers or a good base layer this may be the weekend to do that.

Meet outside room 41/boys locker room.

See everyone tomorrow. You guys rock!

Wednesday, December 7, 2016

Thursday

Split Team tomorrow.
We will have a roller ski group meeting at Beaver Island Fed Ex parking lot at 3:45.
The other group will be running from Tech. You will be outside the entire practice, dress warm. Please bring a hat and gloves. Meet by door 7 at 3:30pm. You will be back by 5. Remember all bags need to be left in the locker rooms.

-The race scheduled for Thursday has been CANCELLED.
-We will be bell ringing Saturday Dec. 17th 12-2 at Cooper Ave Coborn's.

Tuesday, December 6, 2016

Wednesday

Updates:
-The race scheduled for Thursday has been CANCELLED.
-We will be bell ringing Saturday Dec. 17th 12-2 at Cooper Ave Coborn's.
-The team will now meet in the hallway by room 41. (outside boys locker room)
-All backpacks and clothing need to be stored in the locker room. Bring a lock.

Great work today everyone. Today was a great example of training as a Team. Something that may seem miserable in harsh conditions becomes quite tolerable. We all push ourselves and limits individually, but together as a group. Together we each become stronger!
Today and tomorrow the weather is as bad as it can get. If we can train outside in this we're set for the winter:)

No roller skiing tomorrow! Everyone just bring running shoes, we'll start outside and finish back in.

Ian's black down puffy jacket went missing today. If you grabbed it by mistake please bring to practice tomorrow. Thanks Much.

Monday, December 5, 2016

Tuesday

UPDATE: Anyone rolling skiing should bring running shoes as well. If it does snow we may not be able to roller ski. Dress warm the winds a howl'n!

Tomorrow you'll get that first cold sting to the lungs:) Dress warm and shed layers as the intensity increases. We will return indoors for the second half of practice. If you have roller skis bring them, otherwise running shoes will do.

If you have an equipment form please have your  parents sign and return, I'm missing 10!

Thanks to everyone who made it out today. Nothing like a little slop for roller skiing and running. The poor weather only increases the appreciation for the effort when finished. Put newspaper in your shoes and ski boots. Mini Barkley for the running crew, so many little adventures are all around, you just need to be open to finding them!

Thanks Everyone! Looking forward to tomorrow.

Sunday, December 4, 2016

Monday, 5th

We will be having practice Monday from 2-3:30pm. We will meet at the Beaver Island parking lot near FedEx on Clearwater Road. You can park on roads near the parking lot because of limited spots.
Anyone with roller skis bring them, even if you don't have poles!! All other students will be doing a trail run. Bring a compass;)

This next week will be the toughest week of the winter! Not necessarily because of workload but due to the conditions. The forecast calls for temps in the teens with bitter winds and no snow. Dressing properly will be important to your enjoyment outside later this week. We are all craving snow and time on skis but still need to maximize fitness these early weeks. This week will be similar to last as we mix outdoor and indoor fitness. The snow will come, or at least we can start making it in the cold:) Stay positive! We still have two months of skiing ahead of us.

Still need volunteers for concessions (3 students and a parent to supervise) Tuesday the 6th 6-9. Let me know if you can help!

See everyone tomorrow.

Thursday, December 1, 2016

Friday

We'll mix indoor/outdoor work again. Pack the SPF, small chance of sun.

Concessions were a success tonight! One ski wax session covered! Need three more student volunteers next Tuesday. Let me know if you can lend a hand.

Thursday

Nice active recovery today everyone. Great feedback from the master yoga instructor. Peggy mentioned the boys wanted another session sooner then later, so good;)
Peggy and I both love the positive energy. Let's keep it up!
I had an Emerson essay reflection session today and came across an appropriate quote.

"Enthusiasm is one of the most powerful engines of success. When you do a thing, do it with all your might. Put your whole soul into it. Stamp it with you own personality. Be active, be energetic, be enthusiastic, and you will accomplish your object. Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm."
 -Ralph Waldo Emerson

Tomorrow we will be outside the entire practice, bring gloves and a hat, not shorts! We will be done by 5 tomorrow.

Quick additional fundraiser for the Team!
I need 2-3 students and 1 parent to work concessions next Tuesday 6-9. Let me know if you can help.

Thanks everyone

Wednesday

Who wants to run intervals in 30 degrees and rain? us! Today are the days that make the difference. Remember everything we do has a purpose. Simple Nordic walking with poles creates muscle memory and helps create good habits and promote solid form. If we train all muscles in that motion we won't fade as fast late in a race, are core is strong so we don't compensate with shoulders and arms and burn out. We hold strong form and stay efficient!

Tomorrow will be chill but challenging. Outside for the first 20 minutes then back inside till the end. Bring the necessary clothes for both.

Enjoy the calm.

Monday, November 28, 2016

Tuesday

I think everyone needs to add an exercise ball to their Holiday gift list;) Nice work but I think we found some weaknesses. Today was solid but we need to continue to work on total body strength, awareness and engagement of the many stabilizing muscles needed for ski specific movements, did somebody say yoga! Remember water and a post workout snack to aid in recovery. Please try and find time to stretch each night. You can keep it simple, it will help keep you lose and well balanced and again help with recovery.

Plan on being back outside tomorrow. Bring gloves and a hat to keep you warm during transitions. We may cycle indoors for strength, but we will see what the weather is doing.

We're down to are final few Spruce Pots! If you know of anyone interested, send a reminder:)

Please bring your equipment form, signed by you and your parent! Thanks Everyone

Rain, Rain...

Monday, 28th
Hope everyone had a great Holiday Break, bodies and minds recharged! Time to hit high gear, our first race is under two weeks away! With temps running well above average again a return to the dryland life will greet us Monday.

Reminders: Let's finish up the Spruce Pot Fundraiser. Please try and do your part! We have a growing Team and equipment is stretched thin. Without your support these skiing opportunities won't be there.
Thanks again for your help in supporting Tech Nordic.
Concessions Fundraiser Thursday Dec. 1st. Need two or three students to make sales during a basketball game. I'll be looking for volunteers Monday.

Bring workout clothes for both indoor and outdoor practice. If the rain lets up we'll start with a run and finish up with an indoor workout. We have our base fitness in place, this week will be a good push:) Plan on an early Saturday practice this weekend along with a Monday practice the following week, a non-school day. We'll try and find some snow. These two days will be super important in gaining early season ON SNOW cardio, form and technique.

See everyone tomorrow.

Friday, November 25, 2016

Black Friday Dirty Snow

I hope everyone is enjoying their break and time with family.

It's sloppy out there. Not ideal skiing at all! Make sure you stick with the little things: core, strength and balance a couple time a day if possible. Don't be afraid to go for a run. We don't want to lose the gains you've made over the first seven days.

The forecast shows a hard freeze tonight; if you live by or know of a big mowed grassy field there is crust skiing possibility:) The key is you just have to get out early while the temps are still below freezing. Work on technique with no pole skiing. Mimic the poling motion and have fun.

Be creative, be resourceful, transition skiing 101.

Monday, November 21, 2016

Tuesday, Fundraiser Final Push!

Everyone will be skiing at Riverside tomorrow:) Bus leaves Tech at 3:45, door 7. Have your parents pick you up there.
The shelter is currently not open! Bring warm clothes(hat, gloves too!), especially if you are new. You may be making snow angels;)

We have 50 Spruce pots to go. Please try to meet your participation goal of 5. We have a growing Team and equipment is stretched thin. Without your support these skiing opportunities won't be there.
Thanks again for your help in supporting Tech Nordic.

Monday 11/21

The Game Plan:

If you have skis go to Riverside. I was just informed there is a small patch of snow that will be groomed, bottom of the hill in the valley. We can stretch our legs and get a feel for the skis again. Be very observant of any rocks or other debris. I will have a bus running from Tech to Riverside, one-way only. Plan pick-ups accordingly.

All those needing skis we will do a fitting tomorrow in the ski room. I'm hopeful I'll have skis and poles for everyone but boots maybe the problem. You may rent boots from the local shops for the season. Bring clothes for an inside workout after fitting.

Only two days this week, let's make the most of it!

Saturday, November 19, 2016

Saturday 11/19

All those interested, we will be waxing skis and doing a workout at 9:30-12:00ish today at Tech.

Remember the Captains have set up a casual Team Apparel link on facebook, I'll add the link to this page tomorrow. The store front closes Sunday so check it out if you are interested!

Team Apparel

Thursday we will be away from Tech for the entire practice. The temps are supposed to be a bit cooler, bring hats and gloves! You can always take them off.

Thanks for all the laughs and making practices so fun everyone! We may ride the pain train for a bit tomorrow, rest up.

Tuesday, November 15, 2016

Spruce Pot Decoration Wednesday!

Big changes in our schedule this week.

Due to the dumping of snow we're about to receive followed by a cold snap this weekend we've moved Spruce Pot decoration day to tomorrow!

We will meet at the Tech ski room and walk/run to Maia's house. (4 blocks from Tech, address will be in a e-mail tomorrow morning.) Parents or students will be able to pick-up Spruce Pots tomorrow after practice if you already have sales made. Just make sure you have the check!

We will be fitting students who need skis Friday.
IF (when) the snow falls we will have a Team Wax day Saturday to get the skis ready for Monday's practice.
I will have busing from Tech to Riverside for anyone not driving. More details to come...

Cross your fingers and do a snow dance!

Day 1, Here We GO!

First Practice! Nov 14th

I hope everyone is rejuvenated after a short break from their fall sports and ready to kick off an exciting new season as part of the Tech Nordic Ski Team. The unusually warm fall looks to continue for a bit so we will have a few weeks of dryland training ahead of us. I personally enjoy dryland and the opportunity it gives us to focus on all aspects of skiing. We work on specific skills one at time slowly fine tuning our bodies and mind so when the snow flies we'll be ready to rip! I hope everyone is as stoked as I am for this upcoming season and adventure ahead of us! I'm looking forward to the many new faces and those of our returning skiers. See everyone Monday.

Season Starter Reminders:
1. Activity Fee
2. Activity Form if not in a fall sport
3. Practice Starts at 3:30. First practice we will meet by the weight room, door 7.

Of course!

The season is over and we get two days of snow, of course! Anyway, I'm happy to leave the ski equipment with everyone until March. We may need to set up a waxing day mid-Feb if you ski.
The trails are in pretty good shape. The North Loop is solid, Riverside looked decent and St. John's has been getting some good reports as well. Everything on the race start side of the course is groomed along with the old entrance road. The trails on the other side of the road crossing have some logging taking place.

Quick shout out to the Section Team. You guys rocked it. Thanks for the great two days.
Parents thank you for making the long trek north, made it feel like a home meet, so many friendly faces:)
http://www.maplelag.com/posts/news/9616 copy and paste link. Some great pics of the classic race. The classic form looks solid! Nice Work;)

More to come...Section fees, (still waiting on billing) banquet info.

Jr. High Champs Update

The winter theme rolls on...
The venue may change to the North Loop. Please check again tomorrow morning and afternoon for location change. High winds and unexpected temps near 40 have eroded high amounts of snow. With temps remaining above 32 this evening the snow pack may be thin.
Please check back tomorrow. Thanks

The Recap Post

Through the years Tech Nordic always headed North on the second weekend of January. This year the direction was similar but the destination was different. The reasons still applied, grow as individuals, skiers and a Team. The bonus this year was the inclusion of more team members. I usually jot down some thoughts and stories of the events and was requested to do so again. Enjoy

Mora Race Update & Changes

We have a couple major changes with the schedule tomorrow. The race organizer said they lost too much snow from the high temps over the weekend. The winter of no snow or at least not enough has struck again.

The major change is Varsity will be competing in Sprint Races throughout the length of the event.
Varsity will be doing 1km sprint races with the top 2 or 3 skiers advancing to the next round and heat.

No major changes to JV and Junior high- JV will race 4 laps, mass start, JH will race 3 laps mass start.
