The Week Ahead

Grab a note pad. A lot of info below.
The Brainerd Invite was our first true look at where you're at with your fitness and skiing form. Some were impressed, some slightly under. Set goals for the remainder of the season. Use this as motivation towards our ski camp. If you reflect on your practice habits I think any questions you may have can be answered. We have lots of racing and skiing ahead. Let's make each race/practice/ski better than the last. Thanks for staying so positive in the tough conditions:-)
Sorry about JV result names not matching the skier. The Timing company had an error but if you know your bib # you can see your result.

Cathedral Invite:
You will be dismissed at 1:20 for the Race Tuesday at Riverside Park. Check Race flyer tab for times.
You will meet your ride share driver and go to the Meet. JrHigh dismissed at 1:15,  pick you up at 1:30 at Tennis Court doors.
I would highly recommend getting dressed prior to leaving.

Everyone else JV.

Photos are Wednesday. I'll have order forms with me Tuesday please grab one if interested.

We won't have class Friday as we're leaving at 7:30am for our Trip. Final price will be $140.
Please bring checks Tuesday or Wednesday. Made out to Tech Nordic Ski Team.
Please check e-mails for updates and reference the old one for packing musts and tips.

This was the coldest race I've ever coached at. Thoughts wandered towards Jack London's "To Build a Fire"
"Once in a while the thought reiterated itself that it was cold and that he had never experienced such cold. As he walked along he rubbed his cheekbones and nose with the back of his mittened hand. He did this automatically, now and again changing hands. But rub as he would, the instant he stopped his cheek-bones went numb, and the following instant the end of his nose went numb. He was sure to frost his cheeks; he knew that, and experienced a pang of regret that he had not devised a nose-strap...But it didn't matter much, after all. What were frosted cheeks? A bit painful, that was all; they were never serious."
"Also, he noted that the stinging which had first come to his toes when he sat down was already passing away. He wondered whether the toes were warm or numb. He moved them inside the moccasins and decided that they were numb."

Have a great NEW YEAR everyone!!!

BRAINERD RACE MOVED TO FRIDAY 29TH

The Brainerd race has been moved up a day to Friday the 29th because of the extreme cold temps forecasted. The MSHSL legal race limit is -4 air temp.
Everything is the same just a day earlier.
It will be super important that you layer for racing and cover sensitive body parts! If you want to race in training pants and light jacket that will be fine.
Make sure ears are completely covered and vaseline on cheeks and nose or covered with a neck warmer. Earrings must be removed.
We have a really nice warming house for before and after races.

Brainerd Race Schedule on the flyer tab.
We will depart Tech Friday morning at 7:45am, Door 6.
Stay WARM out there!

The Week Ahead

Hope everyone's time with family and friends is going well:-)
With wicked cold blowing in tomorrow try to find an indoor workout to do. Think back to all the dryland core and strength we did. Captains maybe leading a Y day. Contact them if interested.
Wednesday the temps may warm to 0. Try to get out and ski an hour or two. You and some teammates could chase down to Elm Creek, Theo Wirth or Hyland. Find some classic tracks and kick away.  Riverside is always there, just 30 minutes is better than nothing.
Thursday temps look to be around 5-10. Shed some layers and put in some K's, hour plus.
Friday: pre-race ski and wax for the race. Talk with your waxing partners to line up a time.

Brainerd Race Schedule on the flyer tab.
We will depart Tech Saturday morning at 7:45am, Door 6.
I'll e-mail racing roster later this week.
Stay WARM out there!

Mora Race

Check e-mails for race update. Maps, parking, heats for varsity, etc...

Please get dressed in uniforms at school before boarding the bus. Massive amount of skiers tomorrow and it might just simply things!

A few reminders about Races:
LABEL EVERYTHING; SKIS, SKI TIES, POLES, BAG, BOOTS, YOUR FOREHEAD things just disappear at races. You are on the hook for Team Equipment.
Lots of warm clothes for after your race and cheering on your teammates.
You feel great post race. You're warm from racing, "I don't need a jacket, I'm good coach."  your post race high wears off, the chills set in. Bus ride home; "Turn the heat up coach it's freezing in here!" Friday practice. "Hey coach, I don't feel so hot." Winter Break: You guys get lots of skiing in? "Ummm, I was sick..."
Bring the parka and snow pants out post race. You'll thank us later!!

A note on warming up. A nice steady 10 minute ski to get the body temp up and muscles warm. Two or three short pick ups to get the mind and body ready to race. 10 minutes of easy movement and rest where we keep our warm gear on. Cold muscles can't go fast. Physiology they won't/can't go fast. They lock up to protect you from injury not allowing you to ski your best.

Everyone needs to be super aware of their race times and heats tomorrow. There's going to be a lot going on with the different sprint heats. SO, know when you race keep an eye on the time and you'll have a great race.

We're ready to ski fast. Positive mindset, positive energy and the day will be a success!

Wednesday

Thank you everyone for contributing to such a great holiday Team gathering:-) The creativity of the gifts as always was amazing. So many laughs! Gift of the day, century...a real deal crab! Logan's harmonica, combs and mirror was up there. Sam's pink cowgirl hat and knife in sheath were pretty stellar as well! Such a well balanced pot luck. Sugar to nutrient ratio of foods was remarkably good. I think Peggy's spinach soup was most underrated;-) Thanks to all who dared.

Wednesday will be a short ski. Everyone looking to wax will be able to leave at 4:30.
I'll have the roster posted tomorrow. If you have any question feel free to ask. With the Varsity sprints and JV 5km we choose races that best fit your style of skiing. Light fresh snow and skiing under the lights should be quite good!
Read previous post for dismissal times.

SNOW MAKING is firing up again. If you are at all available to volunteer time Wednesday, Thursday or Friday please send me an e-mail. Mostly moving hoses, and snow along with keeping an eye on everything.

MONDAY

Thanks to everyone getting out Saturday morning. One week on the snow. I can see that the confidence levels are way up. We'll keep the momentum rolling this week. The best bet for good skiing is early. I believe Apollo will be skiing with us tomorrow. That means get out ASAP and get your time in. After a week of instruction the biggest step everyone can make is to SKI! The best instruction in the world won't make up for time on skis. Same goes for fitness, we can't stop. On Monday I'd like us to repeat Friday's ski of 45 minutes of non stop skiing. Each lap aim to work on a different technique aspect to beat away the monotony of the little loop. V1, right side, then left. Skate without poles, Open field, V2 partially up the hill, balancing on one ski, figure 8 step turns, poling turns...just don't stop. For all Varsity and JV skiers your biggest gains will be made if you just DON'T STOP.

The week ahead: Tuesday Pot Luck and Secret Santa.
Thursday: Mora Race. Race details on flyer page.
You will be dismissed from class at 1pm depart 1:15. South pick up 1:20.

Please let me know if you will be attending the Brainerd Race on the 30th.

See everyone tomorrow:-)

Friday

YES! Such a great ski. Peggy and I are so excited with where everyone's at. I hope as the practice progressed your comfort for going fast came back as well. I missed seeing that fear in Duncan's eyes as he forgot how to step turn at 30mph! You can't ski on terrain like that and not become a more confident skier. Carry the progressions we did throughout the season. You work so hard on the up hill let's not throw it away on the downs.

Reminders:
1. Secret Santa next Tuesday as well as pot luck. Sign up with Kendra for the Pot Luck, I believe.
2. Monday we'll have a waxing demo for all new skiers.

Looking Ahead...please let me know if you will be Racing the 30th in Brainerd. I know some will be traveling for the holidays.
Also, start thinking ahead to Maplelag. Talk with the fam and give me an early confirmation. Details will be out over break.

Thanks Everyone! Back to the hamster wheel tomorrow. Let's work on what felt weak today.

Thursday

Thursday's game plan:

Ski trip
We have decided to do a training/technique/skills day followed by a Team Race option at PowderRidge Thursday afternoon.
The positives of this mini ski day far outweigh the modified race being held. With only 3 short days of skiing on snow, entering a racing environment for some may be more negative than positive. Many students would only ski between 4-5 minutes some less the whole day.

The Schedule:
We all must take the bus. Individual driving is not allowed!! ROCORI Exception
BRING SKIS HOME TONIGHT!!
Dismissed at 12:21 end of period 4. (get dressed if you think you can squeeze it in.)
Depart 12:30. South pick-up 12:35.
Ski 1-2:30. Race 2:30-2:50.
Bus Departs at 3.
Arrive back to Tech 3:30 for parent pick-ups.

Next Tuesday's Meet in MORA has been changed to Thursday the 21st, Racing Times can be found on the Race Flyer tab under Pages label on the blog (right side of page).
The race date was moved back to allow for more snow making on the trails.

I was also informed of a new Race January 2nd, at Riverside Park. This will be added to our schedule and keep our race days the same.

Wednesday

Same as Tuesday. Find your ride. See you at Riverside.

We saw so many of you fighting to make those positive changes.

I was most proud of the lack of herds grazing snow! Thank YOU

More info about Thursday, Wednesday morning.
Get assignments ahead of time for periods 5,6,7.

Tuesday

Tomorrow find your Ride Share companions right after school and roll out. We have a small room at Riverside where you can leave your skis overnight. You just need to take them home on weekends.

We do have a race scheduled for this Thursday. I'm not sure what to think yet but it is on the books currently.  You will be excused around 1:30. Talk with period 6, 7 teachers please. More info to come.

Lesson 1. Get to Riverside and ski ASAP. With three teams 4:15ish to 5 is a zoo.
Lesson 2. Just because it's the same old loop doesn't mean you need to be the same old skier. Be conscience of your skiing, fight to make a small improvement each lap and day. Find a groove and go. Please break from the herd up mentality and ski. The first week on snow is adaptation to skiing again, you're not going to get better standing at SKI practice.
Lesson 3. For the newbies. Skiing isn't easy. Baby steps and glide, you just got two new feet and arms. It takes time to grow into these new extremities. Each day is better than the last.

To all the returning skiers tomorrow I'll find time to watch you ski. Today was about getting the new class up and skiing. Tomorrow you step into the spot light.

When in doubt SKI!

SKI Monday

We finally get to SKI! although quite confined, it's a start.

What's up? So tomorrow we'll start our ride share system. Everyone needs to meet at door 7, our usual spot immediately after school. Bring bags and skis. You will change at Riverside. We'll make sure everyone has a group and roll out. No later than 3:30. This will be your day to day group. You can then choose to decide where to meet from here on. I'll also look to get us a room at the shelter to store skis on week days so students without cars won't have to lug skis around so much. As far as storing skis tomorrow, find a favorite teacher and ask if you can leave them there, maybe the locker room in the phy-ed teachers room, let them know it'll just be a today thing.

South Students: A parent, Rebecca Scheele (Esther's Mom) will pick you up on 14th Ave S at 3:20, the road that leads out from the Cafeteria Doors. She drives a Honda Odyssey van. Look for Esther in her Tech Team Jacket on the side walk. I believe you can store your skis in the gym area. If you see a fellow skier please make sure and share this info with them. I will bring skis for those who don't have them.

Great to see so many skiers out this weekend!

Saturday, December 9, 2017

Saturday

Coaches will be at Riverside 8-10am.
If you can't make it try and find time to ski this weekend.

FRIDAY

Happy Friday!

Outside to start then back in for strength and core. It felt balmy this morning, may want to layer down for the run.

Your work ethic yesterday was phenomenal! No complaints during a frigid Track workout. Peggy had to pinch me, didn't think it was real;-)

Saturday morning ski, yes SKI!

Thursday

and it's already Thursday. Thanks everyone for picking me up with the positive vibes today! Cold, windy a touch of ice and not a single complaint. I had a sugar crash coming off dessert night, left my coffee mug sitting on the steps as I stuffed my sick baby girl into her snowsuit before work. My caffeine headache was hitting hard about three and you guys carried me through today's run.  A little fresh air and seeing snow guns blowing at Riverside, everything cleared right up! Plan on skiing Saturday:-)

Tomorrow: Outside for the first hour. Please bring a warm jacket to wear over the top of your running clothes. Also, don't forget gloves and a hat. We'll be running hard with good recovery time where I'll need you bundled up! The sun should be out and winds down a bit, so it may feel above zero. (Carter pack your inhaler!)

A note on the uniforms: keep velcro away from them. Make sure they steer clear of your gloves when packing your bag for races.

Tuesday, December 5, 2017

Wednesday

Inside outside...dress warm (hats, gloves are a must!) and throw some shorts in the bag!

Riverside is blowing snow! Hope we're skiing this weekend even if it's on fake snow:-)

No race Thursday, but we'll still find a way to suffer a bit.

12/5

Indoor work tomorrow. Cross your fingers the snow stacks up and doesn't blow away!

Thanks to everyone who showed up this morning.

Parent dessert night Tuesday, check e-mails.

Monday

Monday hummm....what will the weather do? Forecast calls for rain so check back here for a change of schedule if it is raining.
As of now let's plan on a roller ski or run starting at Beaver Island Fed Ex parking lot @ 9am. We'll keep it short and sweet and aim for an hour of hard work.

Again, check back in case of rain.

Parent Desert Night Tuesday. An e-mail with details was sent out last week.
