Go get some!

If you haven't been out in the fresh snow, go get some!
The trails at Riverside are solid. Just a few thin sections; the little climb along the wall has some rocks showing through. Take your time and pick a good line and you shouldn't damage your skis.
The flats through the oak trees are excellent. Solid edging allows for great control and technique work. Don't be afraid of doing some no poling. I've heard a few too many comments about sore arms, which means you're forgetting to use those big leg muscles!

The North Loop is pretty rough, if you have Team skis I'd prefer if you stayed off it. The risk of damaging the skis are pretty high.

More snow in the forecast for Monday evening into Tuesday. Grooming should take place Tuesday evening so skiing Wednesday should be primo at most trail networks.

This is what we've been waiting for! Enjoy the Holiday Gift from Ma Nature:)

Reminder: Please check e-mail and respond to trip message.

Break

Please check back occasionally for updates.

The ski trip is the Friday we return to school, January 8! I will send out an e-mail soon with fees and time lines.
Don't be afraid to go and find snow to ski on over break;) If you're in the metro, Elm Creek and Hyland are great options. Push-ups, dips and core work are your friends and a run never hurts in place of skiing.

Enjoy the break, and check back for some skiing opportunities that may come available next week for us.

Plan on skiing, skiing and more skiing. Pack a lunch, snacks and water.

Please check with teachers and try to take tests early Tuesday before school if possible!

Dismissed from class 11:30 depart 11:45. South dismissed 11:40, 11:50 pick up.
We will finish up 2:45 and make it back for busing, or parent pick-up at 3:30.

Friday

I need to commend everyone who had the gumption to get out early and charge that icy luge track and bounce up after some hard slams! The Nordic Life can be rough, especially low snow years! Those starter conditions were tough, no, terrible! With the groomer out the transformation was in progress throughout practice. The icy abyss transformed into an almost malleable ski trail. I think I complained more then anyone. Thanks again for making the most of the day!

Hit the repeat button.

See everyone tomorrow.

Thursday

We will keep fighting the good fight! Riverside bumper skiing round 2 tomorrow.
Sorry to all those who were delayed again by another late bus.

Brainerd's Race Monday the 21st has been cancelled.
All hope for Tuesday isn't lost yet.

Reminder: Dine to Donate December 17th and 22nd at Granite City Food & Brew. Mention to your friends and family. If they mention Tech Nordic or Cross Country we get 10% of the tab.

Wednesday

Bring those skis! I'm banking on snow tonight so we'll be back at Riverside!

Great races all around. The massive amount of climbing in such a short circuit pushed everyone to their limits. It appeared with race brain in full effect many subtle techniques we worked on went out the window. The plus is that most of you seemed conscious of this, we need to change these habits. I think everyone has an idea what their weaknesses are, but number one for me is cardio. We need to keep moving on the L shaped track at Riverside. We just can't stop and talk, keep skiing, it's in your hands. Talk while you ski.

Special props to Beka, Alexis, Shane, Carter and Ulises for going from rookie race to the Monster JV course today. You survived and are better for it, I think;)

Bus leaving from Tech as always tomorrow for Riverside. See you all there.

Reminder: Dine to Donate December 17th and 22nd at Granite City Food & Brew. Mention to your friends and family. If they mention Tech Nordic or Cross Country we get 10% of the tab.

Wake Up Call

In-cred-i-ble!
adjective 1.impossible to believe.

What a morning session. I saw more gains in two hours then the previous two weeks. Everyone was open to critique and improving themselves as skiers. Many of the dryland puzzle pieces were fit into the active skate technique. Everything in the dryland world had a place and a reason built towards developing all around ski fitness and technique. The puzzle is coming together my friends. We shed our inhibitions and were open to crashing in the name of progress. Scary fun!

I hope everyone got down on the delectable egg bake action from Peggy. It had that Yooper pasty flare I crave . I also sampled an amazing banana muffin that melted in my mouth;-) Life Lesson: Just say yes when someone hands you a muffin.

Again, thanks to everyone who passed on the warmth of Tech Nordic Holiday cheer on our final day of Salvation Army bell ringing!

Will post Tuesday Race Schedule tomorrow night/Monday morning. Times will be similar just the order of races flipped a bit. GV, GJV, BV, BJV, JH, Rookie. Just waiting for confirmation.

In Defense of Winter

Today I had been searching for inspiration to drive me and you forward during this eternal winter warm spell that is so deficient of snow. I glance out my rain streaked window at work, watching puddles form and see passing cars with windshield wipers waving goodbye to our snow. I know not everyone will hear my pleas or see my joy as encouragement to stick with skiing. I find pleasure in exercise, and rejuvenation in exercise that leads me to the outdoors, especially silent sports. I know not everyone does. You joined the ski team to ski, race and compete, but if you haven’t noticed already, this sport, this team, is about so much more. Yesterday there were so many smiles, laughs, grass tumbling wrecks and general havoc that I can’t help but appreciate your spirit. Seeing Muftah tip to the back of his skis streaking through the grass just missing trees was just too good! This lack of snow sucks, but you guys continue to astound me making the most of it.  While listening to a podcast today, my thoughts muddled, these serendipitous words lifted me up. So I thought I’d put these wonderful expressions out here for you to read. I hope they can maybe do the same for you in your own way.

Paraphrasing from my chicken scratch notes:

I never regret exercising, I always feel better, I always feel calmer when I do. Pay attention to the quiet things, because joy is often quiet. Inconsequential things have to make noise or we wouldn’t pay attention. Moving can turn down the volume. When you truly listen, the quiet things have the most to say.     -Fitz Cahall-

Even if we are not skiing but doing things revolving around the sport we can find those blissful moments. I hope we have a chance to find them on snow, gliding on skinny skis. Remember, even in the madness of racing there is quiet. Please remain open and stay encouraged. It is a tough lesson, but great skiing is never guaranteed and when we have that chance it always makes it special.

Thanks everyone, see you tomorrow.

Thursday Update:11am

Everyone will practice at Tech today! Meet outside the ski room.
Please pass the word along.
Thanks Much.

Thursday

Race Updates:
Next Thursdays race has been temporarily moved to Tuesday based on current snow conditions.
Pretty much the same schedule as this Tuesday. So let's make contact with our teachers ahead of time and square up assignments, notes and tests.

Reminder that the Brainerd race on the 21st is an all day affair. With the Holiday break starting Wednesday I'm sure there will be a few tests to take ahead of time, make arrangements.

Tomorrow we will be breaking down into two groups:
1. All JV, Varsity and JH racers meet at Tech for a run and weight session. The cardio needs just aren't being met on the Riverside slope.

2 All Rookie racers (including Karl) to Riverside Park to ski. The more time on skis the better. They groomed the trail as we left tonight so conditions should be better then today. Let's continue to refine all the technique work we did today and build confidence on our descending  skills.

Salvation Army Bell Ringing Saturday;11-1 Coborn's on Copper. Please sign up for a single hour or the entire time.
The community helped us through our fundraiser so let's return the favor to the greater St. Cloud Community and lend a hand with this volunteer opportunity!

See everyone tomorrow.

In The Books

Race 1 is in the books.
Let's capture this racing excitement and let it drive us through this eternal snow drought!!
I hope everyone was as proud of their races today as Peggy and I were of you. So many smiles, soooo many great crash stories. Sorry about the tight race quarters, little snow equals little race track. I think it was still a positive race experience. Think about your weaknesses and let's make them a strength; did somebody say, cough, cough umm, humm, downhill tuck and step turns. Maybe bring a helmet tomorrow because we're going downhill;-)

Tomorrow we'll be back at Riverside trying to tap into any snowy remnants that remain.

You guys rock! See you tomorrow.

Race #1

Minor Departure time change. Dismissed from class 10:50. Bus leaves at 11. South pick up 11:10. South student please dress prior to getting on bus. The bus will be making a return trip to Tech after the race.
For race times view earlier e-mail.

Race Day Prep and Checklist:
1. Skis, Boots, Poles.
2. Uniform, base layers, hat, gloves, etc...
3. Food for before and after race. Snack and lunch.
4. Try to eat a large breakfast and just a light lunch. We really don't want to consume much food in the 3hrs leading up to the race.
5. Fluids: keep hydrated throughout the day and up to the race.
6. Dry clothes for before and after your race. Winter jacket.
7. If your parents are picking you up I need to see them prior to you leaving.

Remember this is non-typical race format. A great way to start the season in a relaxed racing manor.
Let's have fun, race fast and cheer each other on to a successful first race.

Don't forget we are student athletes. With this we choose to take on a larger responsibility in our school. This includes time, class and homework management. Sometimes we need to make arrangements in our regular schedule to meet all of these demands. Let's be proactive and meet all the demands of a student athlete.

Monday

Wax day. Bring your running shoes as well. I'd like everyone to get a short run in. We'll break into two groups and make a switch. Ease congestion in the wax room and get our body and mind ready for our first race of the year.

Race schedule and departure times on previous post.

Reminder:
Talk with Teachers tomorrow!!

Bell ringing again next Saturday. Corborn's on Cooper 11-1. You can sign up for just an hour shift.

Shout out to all the ladies from this Saturday's ringing session. All expectations were shattered with the array of Holiday cheer that was bestowed upon all Coborn's shoppers from the Tech Nordic choral session. I think I underwhelmed with my inadequate repertoire of Holiday songs; we all have room to grow;-) Thanks Again everyone!

See you tomorrow.

Confirmation that next Thursday's race has been moved to Tuesday at Powder Ridge.

With this change all events are moved earlier into the day. The owner needs us off the hill by 3pm. To accommodate the races have to start early.

This is pretty much a practice race. The format is non-typical, the organizer is just trying to give us an opportunity to race.

Please check back Sunday night for Monday practice details and location.

Friday

So many smiles today! Way to make the most of shredded ice conditions. Once we found that sugar cord everyone seemed to find their inner skier. What an unexpected day of gains. You guys rock. Let's see if we can sneak out another great day on the skinny's tomorrow.

Wednesday, December 2, 2015

Race Cancelled

Due to the warm temps and thinning snow the race has been cancelled for tomorrow.
We will have regular practice instead.
The conditions won't allow for a race but we should still be able to squeeze out another day on the skis! Pick ups at Riverside.

See everyone tomorrow.

Tuesday, December 1, 2015

Wednesday

In the words of my world traveling comrade Cjell "the stoke is high my friends." I hope everyone had an amazing first day on snow. I can't wait to get back at it tomorrow. Please feel free to extend your time at practice tomorrow. We may only have a day or two left on snow for a bit so let's maximize it. Just remember, it does get easier! You will be surprised how much more comfortable you will be even tomorrow. Try to embrace your dryland skill set and find those balance points. If you weren't falling you can push yourself a little more;-)

See everyone tomorrow.

Ski Day 1?

Well, the snow is falling but the big question is, will it be enough?
If we get 6 inches we will be skiing tomorrow. I want everyone to plan on skiing. Be prepared.
Busing: there will be a bus departing Tech from door 6 at 3:45. Tech students change prior to busing to maximize time on snow. South students just do your best to make the transfer on time and change at Riverside. If you are riding with a friend make sure and let your parents know who you will be carpooling with.
Parents can pick up their students at Riverside Shelter tomorrow at 5:30.

O.K. we have snow and if we're skiing it will be thin! A lot of you have team skis or have recently purchased new skis and we don't want to ruin them day one! Any damage to the base of the ski reduces performance and wrecks the life of the ski.
PLEASE SKI SMART! Don't clip in until you're next to the trail.
AVOID, SIDEWALKS, ROCKS, DIRT and other debris you see coming up through the snow.
Let's protect your and our team investment.

Lastly, how can you not love snow? It's so gorgeous outside, enjoy, and we'll see everyone tomorrow.

PLEASE check blog tomorrow during the day for updates or changes.

Parent dessert night tomorrow:-)

Nov 30th

Welcome Back!
I hope everyone's break recharged their battery. We have a big push the next 3 1/2 weeks. With four races on the schedule the learning curve is going to be sharp. Let's make the most of each practice so we're confident going into these races.
Speaking of races the first is this Thursday. The race organizer said it will be dependent on this upcoming snow, so it's snow storm or bust on this first one.
Tomorrow I want everyone to bring their ski boots. If the snow hasn't started falling yet we will be roller skiing. That means more importantly everyone with roller skis bring them tomorrow!!

Meet at the ski room.

Reminders:

-Parent dessert night Tuesday. Check e-mails for details.

-I think we're down to our final 5-10 spruce pots!

Monday, November 23, 2015

Tuesday

Quick reminder, if you have your own ski boots bring them tomorrow. We will meet at door 6 at Tech. Practice will be 9:30-11.

Pancakes, eggs, bacon, hashbrowns with a side of waxing. You guys rock. Not sure you want your parents to know you have that skill set;-) Thanks for the all hands in effort by everyone.

Monday: practice at Riverside 9:30-11am.

Tuesday: 9:30am-11 at Tech.

If everyone does their part this should not be a problem Thanks Again to everyone who has sold their quota +!

Tomorrow I'm hoping we can make a move to Riverside park.

Saturday: we have lots of dry and new skis that are hungry for wax. Let's think about feeding the need. More tomorrow.

Store Front for Hats and Buffs/Cozy

If you are interested in either or both you need to have your order in by Nov. 16th at midnight. The two are an amazing combination into true Nordic and winter comfort. I live in mine most of the winter, skiing, biking, running, shoveling the driveway, etc.
Sorry for the short turn around, but this date allows for a mid December ship date. Anything later and we may have slipped into January product run.

Friday!

Way to make the most of today Team. It was just one of those days where any normal person bags their outdoor activity. The winds were 15 mph, gusts to 30, temps in the 30's, clouds heavy with a kaleidoscope of gray. Top this sundae off with a touch of rain and sleet, thank you! You guys nailed it. Hardly a complaint and lots of smiles. I was sipping my tea this morning and my tea bag tab of wisdom proclaimed "joy is the essence of success." Let's continue to have fun and grow.

Reminders:

Goals: please hand in tomorrow.

Spruce Pot Bedazzlers, let me know if you're open to help.

Team Store Front will open tomorrow. Check blog for link. Hat and Buff/Cozy will be available.
It will close Monday I believe. Sorry for the quick turn around but we should get them mid-December this way.

South students we will meet you at the track, but practice will finish at Tech for pick-ups.

See you tomorrow.

Thursday

Thanks everyone for your patience today as we fitted students with skis. Next step boots, but we'll save that for another day.
Thursday looks brisk, winds may finally have a little chill behind them. Please remember hats, gloves, pants and a jacket. Meet in the hallway outside the weight room.

Reminders:

Goals-reference post from earlier this week and put some thoughts on paper for us by Friday.

Spruce Pots-should be ready to distribute Monday:-)

Volunteers for Decorating-please talk with Miriam.

Wednesday rain?

Wonderful work today. I do have to say I am quite jealous to have missed out on the amazing yoga session lead by coach Peggy! I'll seek the divine tutelage she bestowed in her students until I can experience it first hand. I do hope you found better body awareness, leading to better balance, strength and flexibility through your session today.
With rain, ;-( not snow looking fairly certain tomorrow I will be looking to fit skis to skiers during practice. Everyone will be working out, just those of you with skis a bit longer. We will be doing indoor workouts. Maybe stuff a light jacket and pants in the gear bag just in case we should catch a break in the gales of November.

Spruce Pot flyers were e-mailed out today. If you didn't receive one e-mail me so I can send to you.

See everyone tomorrow.

Meet in Room 41 Lecture Hall.

Goals

Thanks for making the first day of practice great everyone! Remember to think about your goals for the season. I would like something in the direction of long term vision and short term motivation to give focus and drive you throughout the season. Below are some ideas and direction to help you make your goal as purposeful as possible.  See everyone tomorrow.

Setting Goals

The ski season spans about three months, and you will be amazed how quickly that will pass. Make something out of this time: and to do this, set goals. And make them "SMART" goals:

Specific
"I want to get better at skiing" is not specific. "I want to finish in the top half at a race" is specific.

Measurable
"I want to finish in the top half at a race" is measurable. How can you decide if you've met your goal if you can't measure it?

Attainable"I want to ski for the U.S. Olympic team" is not attainable. What's attainable will be different for everyone, but you will surprise yourself at what you can achieve if you commit to it. You can take a lofty goal and make it happen by breaking it down into bite-sized attainable pieces.

Relevant
"I want to write the next great American novel", while admirable, isn't relevant to skiing. There are things besides skiing fast that could be relevant. "I want to cheer my teammates on for their entire race when I'm not skiing" is an example.

Time-bound
Set deadlines: "I want to finish in the top half at a race by the end of December". This is an element that's really easy to forget or procrastinate, which makes it especially important to focus on.

I'll be hoping to talk with you about your goals for this season, so spend a little time thinking about what you want to get out of it.

First Practice! Nov 9th

I hope everyone is rejuvenated after a short break from their fall sports and ready to kick off an exciting new season as part of the Tech Nordic Ski Team. The unusually warm fall looks to continue for a bit so we will have a few weeks of dryland training ahead of us. I personally enjoy dryland and the opportunity it gives us to focus on all aspects of skiing. We work on specific skills one at time slowly fine tuning our bodies and mind so when the snow flies we'll be ready to shred;-) I hope everyone is as stoked as I am for this upcoming season and adventure ahead of us! I'm looking forward to the many new faces and those of our returning skiers. See everyone Monday.

Season Starter Reminders:
1. Activity Fee
2. Activity Form if not in a fall sport
3. Practice Starts at 3:45. First practice we will meet in RM 41/Lecture Hall. Down the hall from boys locker room.
4. Fundraiser kick off. Flyers will come out later this week. Start taking orders.

Season Wrap Up

I need to thank all the parents for their great support throughout the year. You guys hold the team together. You are our biggest fans at races, cheering on our team along with your son or daughters, and supplying the team with endless snacks and meals during the race season. I thank you all again.

It was such a successful season on so many levels. I wish everyone could have been apart of Sections and State success. These guys were knocking on the door of winning all year but were just short. The ski community had already handed the Section title to Brainerd but these guys poured their heart into that Section race. Having the chance to take a team to State is such a gift and to do 3 years in a row is as special as it gets.

For our first year skiers; it’s always exciting to step into something new. You give yourself a chance to grow in so many different directions. Thanks for taking the first step!

We have such a great senior class. I was fortunate to work with them for four years.  They will be leaving a big void for us to fill.

The commitment these kids gave me was so overwhelming. All you want is the best for them! I didn't want to fail them. They put all of themselves into this team and sport.
I hope those who were new were able to learn and gain experience through the seniors guidance.
.
The ski community is special, everyone becomes a great friend.  Families spend time outside during a extraordinary time of the year and you develop a bond with those that you share this awesome activity with. I know it’s tough to see that now as High School skiers but you have all developed a skill to last a life time and you will appreciate some day. I know that!

I just have to say again and especially to the seniors…
I’m so proud that I was able to be part of what I hope is just the beginning of your ski careers.
I was no different than anyone here and when I started skiing and to look at all the great things skiing has brought to my life I don’t know where I’d be or what I would have done without. It has shaped my life and even brought me my family!

You still have a lifetime of trails to explore and friends to make so just always keep those skis around.

Till our next great season, thanks everyone!

Section Update:

The Team had an absolutely fabulous day at the Section 8 meet!
The boys team showed the success of a season long build for the most important race of the year. They skied amazing and pulled off the upset over favored Brainerd team for Section title and the first team win of the season. This was the third straight Section title!! Way to rock it boys.
We also had two ladies claim State Qualifying results. Katie took 3rd place and Kaethe took 8th!
The many new skiers on the Section meet team all performed well above expectations and were putting in extra hours in anticipation of their first pursuit race. So proud of everyone stepping up and performing so well on such a big stage.

The State Meet will be next Thursday the 12th. If you see any of the Section skiers in the halls wish them luck!

CLC recap :)

What a day full of some crazy triumphant moments!

Something unique to cross country skiing is that each competitor not only competes against their opponents but also against the elements of nature in the race course and in ever varying snow conditions. Today was one of those days the elements posed extra challenges. The snow was icy, the kick wax was hit or miss for classic, the corners were fast, and the climbs were long. Regardless of all that, each skier got out there and worked their hardest which resulted in some great finishes across the board!

Way to represent Tech well skiers! It was incredible watching each of you get out there and ski with passion and determination. It was also incredible seeing you all out there cheering for each other and celebrating at the finish. Those are the memories that will last a lifetime!

All Conference award winners: Katie Williams, Kaethe Schroder, Cory Rouw, Zeb Osgood, and Isaac Weiber
Honorable Mention award winner: Carter Scheele

Although we didn't get the conference title for the boys this year and the lack of snow has been a challenge, I am reminded of the lyrics from The Rolling Stones: "You can't always get what you want. But if you try sometimes, you just might find that you get what you need!" Regardless of the tricky elements and Brainard skiing very well, we still had fun and got some good work in before sections!

TOMORROW: Meet at Riverside for a good ski! Also, see the schedule below for the Jr.High Championship race on Thursday. It would be GREAT to have the whole team out there cheering after school that day! Plan to be there!
